The PlayStation 2 or PS2 was Sony's second console and the successor to the original PlayStation, or PS1. Development of the PlayStation 2 was announced on March 1, 1999, and it was released on March 4, 2000 in Japan and October 26, 2000 in North America. The console was available in two models: the original  "fat" model which was the only model available at the time of the console's debut, and the "slim" model which was released on November 3, 2004 in Japan and November 25, 2004 in North American. The slim model consisted of a lighter, streamlined look which it achieved in part by removing the consoles ability to use a PS1's memory card, however like the earlier model it could still play PS1 games.

The PS2 was part of the sixth generation of consoles, it has sold over 155 million units worldwide, making it the best selling home video game console of all time. As such, it was also one of the longest produced consoles of all time and continued to be actively produced until 2013.

Only a single Breath of Fire title was produced for the PS2, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, which was released in 2002.
