The overworld is the main representation of the world in Breath of Fire series, used as an area which the player can traverse in order to travel to the various locations in the game. It is a shrunk down version of the world with limited details, such as towns and dungeons placed on it. The lack of detail and small size of the world map allows for representing a larger world with less storage space used and for less time consuming travel than if full detail towns and areas were used for the entire world.

In addition, there are map elements that depend on the game being played. For example, in Breath of Fire, animals may spawn randomly after battles and can be hunted by Bo in order to gain usable items such as meat and antlers.

In Breath of Fire, traversal of the overworld is limited depending on the character in the leader slot and items contained in the inventory. Ryu can fish using a fishing rod and bait in bodies of water. Bo must be in the leader spot to traverse through forests. Mogu can dig in certain spots in the overworld to find hidden items and locations. After Nina is found after she gets sent back in time, she gains the ability to fly across the entire world as a giant bird, which makes navigation across the vast terrain easier, as while flying no obstacles will stop her.

A time system is implemented in the game, and certain events required to progress through the story requires night time or day time in order to activate.

A map of the overworld can be shown by pressing the Select button after the map is acquired while on the overworld. Only areas that have been traversed by the player will be revealed on the world map.
