Hachio, retranslated as Haochi in the PSP release, is a non-playable character who appears in Breath of Fire III. He is the royal chef of Wyndia and is very loyal to Princess Nina, as evidenced by the fact that he doesn't report her or the rest of the party's snooping around in the lower levels of the castle. He is one of the masters that player characters can study under in order to learn new skills.

As a Master[]

Hachio/Haochi becomes available as a master once you enter Castle Wyndia again as Adult Ryu, after the events of getting a passport with Rei. He requires a Swallow Eye, a Beef Jerky, a Martian Squid, and an Angler as a requirement to become an apprentice. The Martian Squid is fishable between Mt. Myrneg and Eygnock Road. The Angler may be found in several places in the Urkan Region, as well as near the town Cliff.

Hachio gives the same positive stat bonuses as Bunyan does, although apprenticing under Hachio causes you to lose more Agility. However, the skills Hachio teaches are quite useful and Demonbane is one of only three Holy elemental attacks in the game. As a result, the player might elect to temporarily replace Bunyan with Hachio until all of his skills have been learned.

Personality[]

Hachio has a reputation as perfectionist and commands the loyalty of his kitchen staff. He is also a clean freak who is determined to kill on sight any rats which find their way into the kitchen. Despite this, he has a soft spot for princess Nina and doesn't report her childhood excursions to the lower levels of the castle, even though her presence there is officially forbidden. His kitchen staff follow his example in this regard.

Appearance[]

Hachio's depiction as a large, feline chef shares similarities with Wild Cat from Breath of Fire II. Notably, both characters teach the Chopchop/Mighty Chop skill to a party member. However, their Japanese names confirm that they are two distinct characters.

Etymology[]

The character's Japanese name, "Haochi," is the Chinese word 好吃 ("hao-chi"), which means "tasty," befitting of his occupation as a chef.
