Katt is a playable character who appears in Breath of Fire II. She is a fiesty young gladiator from Coursair and one of the few surviving members of the Woren tribe. Ryu first meets her at the coliseum, where she is introduced as a naturally born fighter, who wields a claw-tipped staff. Katt is the first Woren to appear in the series, and the next three games all include playable Woren characters. She also serves as a possible love interest for Ryu. The game's end credits reveal her full name to be Rinpoo Chuan, implying that "Katt" may be merely a nickname.

Role in Breath of Fire II[]

Katt first meets Ryu after he takes Baba's place fighting against her during a gladiatorial match. The match ends up being rigged, with Katt being poisoned via dart mid-way through it. Ryu and Rand help heal her and Katt joins them in order to find out who was behind the attempt on her life and why. The culprit is revealed to be Augus, the Coliseum's owner, who had gained demonic powers. After his defeat, Katt continues to travel with the party, partly out of gratitude to Ryu for saving her life, and partly to appease her natural sense of curiosity and adventure. She becomes one of the first inhabitants of Township.

During Katt's travels, she and the party gradually uncover a wider conspiracy concerning other individuals with demonic abilities and their ties to the seemingly benevolent St. Eva Church, a comparatively new religion. They also meet the Resistance, a group dedicated to discovering and exposing the church's true aims. The Resistance's leader, Tiga, is immediately smitten with Katt and while she admires him, she fears that his feelings for her largely stem from the fact that they are two of the only living members of the nearly extinct Woren tribe (indeed, they are the only two Woren to appear in the game). Katt eventually reluctantly agrees to marry Tiga, however, he is killed during a resistance mission by the corrupt priest Father Hulk, who is secretly the demon Habaruku. Following Tiga's death and Habaruku's defeat, the party traces the source of the church's activity to the demon Deathevan, who is the son of the demonic goddess Myria, aka Tyr, the final boss of the previous game. Katt helps the party to ultimately defeat Deathevan and ends the church's reign of influence.

Appearance[]

Katt has short straight red hair, green eyes, and a cat-like tail and ears. In her SNES and the GBA in-game portraits, she is portrayed with green eyes, however in some of her artwork, her eyes are depicted as red. She wears a lightly armored sports sleevless top that end shortly before her belly button, fingerless gloves and open-toe shoes, Her lower body is that of a tiger's and is naturally covered with fur. She wields a staff with clawed cat paws on both ends.

Personality[]

Katt is guileless and often speaks whatever is on her mind. She is somewhat arrogant, often bragging in front her opponents in the coliseum before battle. She is naturally aggressive and loves to fight, befitting her occupation as a gladiator. She is also extremely competitive and views everything as "win or lose." While her interests are wide, she has a short attentions span and bores easily.[1] Katt accepts Ryu as a friend after he saves her from being poisoned during a rigged gladiatorial match, and joins his party in order to find out who attempted to kill her and why. It is implied throughout the game that she may have romantic feelings for Ryu.

In Battle[]

Katt has the highest attack speed in the party, but suffers from low defense and average HP. Katt is not magically inclined like the rest of the cast. She can learn a few powerful offensive spells early in the game, but will only be able to use them once her AP grows large. This means that she won't be able to use these spells until much later in the game because her AP growth is extremely poor (merging her with the Devil Shaman does incidentally boost her AP enough to use these high cost power spells earlier, so less time can be spent on leveling her up). Her field abilities are Hunt and Smash, and her fighting ability is Dare (where she provokes the enemy party, concentrating all aggression on her). She changes her abilities and appearance when merged with the Devil Shaman. When combined with the Devil Shaman, Katt loses her field ability, but her combat capabilities improve dramatically.

Etymology[]

Katt means "cat" in Swedish and Norwegian. Her Japanese name, リンプー, is commonly translated as Lin Pǔ; "Lin" is Chinese for "forest", and "Pǔ" meaning "big". In the game's end credits her surname is listed as Chuan, which is Chinese for fist.
