The crank is a Key Item in Breath of Fire IV. It is required to operate a lever that lowers and raises the elevator on the other side.

Party receives the crank.
Ryu and the others need to cross the Dam on their way to Synesta. The party heads to the Foreman who hands them the crank. After both sluice gates have been lowered, the mud dragon starts to act up and triggers a large mudwave, causing the party to rush to the elevator and to escape just in time.
