Charm (おまじない, Omajinai?, lit. "Good luck charm") is a recurring battle ability in the the Breath of Fire series.

Breath of Fire III[]

Charm costs 0 AP to use. It can be acquired after gaining 2 levels with a character having Meryleep as a master. When used in combat on an enemy, their Drop level will be increased by 1, while their Steal level will increase by 2 (these levels are indicated by an * in the tables below). Its effect on drop/steal rates does not stack, it can only be used once per enemy.

Drop Rate[]

LV* Drop Rate
0 0 (impossible)
1 1/256
2 1/128
3 1/64
4 1/32
5 1/8
6 1/2
7 1/1 (guaranteed)

Steal Rate[]

Agility Mod Steal Mod

< 49 & >= 29 11
< 29 & >= 19 10
< 19 & >= 9 9
<  9 & >=-10 8
<-10 & >=-20 7
<-20 & >=-30 6
<-30 & >=-50 5

Steal Rates
LV Steal Rate Drop Rate
0 0 (impossible) 0 (impossible)
1 1 1/256
2 3 1/128
3 6 1/64
4 12 1/32
5 16 1/8
6 32 1/2
7 32 1/1 (guaranteed)

The success rate for stealing is calculated with the following formula:

Success rate = Steal Mod * Steal Rate / 256

If the Item was not stolen, this item can be dropped with the provided Drop rate, which is equal to the rate for exclusivly dropped items.

For Example: Mist Man's Seeking Sword has a Steal Level of 3, giving it a steal rate of 6. Using Charm raises the Level to 5, giving it a steal rate of 16 (the chance to get the Sword nearly tripled). And if it is not stolen, there still is a 1/8 chance of it being dropped.

Breath of Fire IV[]

Charm costs 0 AP to use. It can be acquired from Marlok after acquiring a Copper Ball or better.

These mechanics determine the sucess of stealing items from the target.

If (Agility Difference < -30) Agility Mod = 0
Else If (Agility Difference < 41) Agility Mod = [(AgilityDifference + 40) / 10]
Else Agility Mod = 8

Combo Mod = ComboLevel * 2
Steal Chance = (Combo Mod + convert{Agility Mod}) * convert{Steal Mod}

If (Steal Chance >= rnd{0, 4095}) item is stolen

Combo Level can be either 0, 1 or 2
Agility Difference = "Attacker" - Target

The best chance to steal something comes from having at least 40 more Agility than the target and using Steal/Pilfer as the last attack in a Treasure-type combo, which also uses Charm. If the enemy has a Steal Mod of 1, the chances to steal the item are 1,587% under these circumstances. The probability to get a drop of rarity 1 is 1,953% with Charm.
