The Catacombs are a dungeon in Breath of Fire III. They are located in the basement of Wyndia Castle and provide an alternate exit to Wyndia City from the castle prison.
The majority of the Catacombs are inaccessible after you exit the area. Only the last crypt can be revisited using the exit to Wyndia City.
Story[]
After Ryu rescues Nina from Balio and Sunder, she leads him through the catacombs to escape. After they reach the exit, Ryu states his intention to stay in Wyndia and look for Rei and Teepo; Nina decides to help him.
After returning to Wyndia as an adolescent, Ryu can find Lang playing hide-and-seek behind one of the tombstones in the final crypt.
Layout[]
The Catacombs' upper floor has several tombstones scattered throughout it, along with a raised platform in the north that serves as a one-way exit from the lower floor, and a narrow stone bridge along the northwestern side of the room leading to a larger, more ornate tombstone.
The lower floor is simply a large, open area with several furnaces that lead up to the flames lighting the upper floor. There is no way to progress from here; return to the upper floor and solve the puzzle of the tombstones.
The ornate tombstone at the end of the stone bridge reads: "A treasure to he who pushes the 7 words... The path opens to he who learns the 7 words..." This is a clue to the puzzle of the Catacombs: seven of the other tombstones in the room have phrases on them, with words colored in green and red:
- "Look at the graves to find their secrets"
- "This will open Not that"
- "After climbing the tall grave, you will fall outside"
- "Whether you go above or beneath is up to you"
- "What is the meaning of green and red?"
- "I remember... You don't know..."
- "It is a high place... But not here"
Pushing all the green words, then returning to the ornate tombstone and pushing the letter "7" will solve one side of the puzzle, dropping you into a raised portion of the lower floor that holds a Light Bangle. Pushing any of the red words will simply drop you into the lower floor with no reward.
The eighth tombstone on the upper floor, located in the highest part of the southeastern end of the room, is different. None of the words on it are in color; you must remember which words on the other seven tombstones were colored red and press them in sequence. Correct words are indicated in bold:
- "Remember the red words, not the green..."
- "You were right in climbing up...from here you fall..."
- "I will show you the right path..."
- "You need not fear--the exit is there"
- "Do not be lost--look for the hidden trap"
- "Now, what is beneath you will lead to what is above you..."
- "Do not choose that one--this is what you seek..."
Successfully pressing all seven words will drop Ryu and Nina into a small chamber, which has a hidden hole in the floor that leads into another crypt. This one has an exit in the southwestern wall that leads outside to the lower district of Wyndia City.
Enemies[]
As most of the enemies you'll see here are weak to holy damage, the Silver Knife works extremely well as a weapon for Ryu.
Be wary of any formation that includes both a Thunder and one or more Volts; the Thunder will begin the battle by casting Jolt on its own team, healing and powering up its Volt allies, who will then be able to use Jolt themselves instead of their weak Charge skill.
Enemy Skills[]
- Double Blow (NutTroop)
- Bone Dart (Ghoul)
- Charge (Volt)
