Bunyan is a recurring character throughout the Breath of Fire series, who appears in Breath of Fire II, Breath of Fire III, and Breath of Fire IV. In each of his iterations he appears as a woodsman who lives a solitary life in the wild.
Appearances[]
Breath of Fire II[]
- Main article: Baba
Bunyan (known as Baba in English release of the game), is a woodsman living in "TagWoods". He is a formidable combatant who occasionally participates in fights at the coliseum in Coursair. He is depicted as fighting Katt there during her prologue scene on the title screen. During the game, he is also scheduled to fight her. As the other characters' prologue scenes seem to be canonical and set slightly before the first chapter of the game, it's possible that Bunyan and Katt's scheduled fight is in fact a rematch. After Bunyan is defeated by Ryu he agrees to allow him to pose as him and take his place in the upcoming fight against Katt.
Breath of Fire III[]
- Main article: Bunyan (Breath of Fire III)
Ryu, Rei, and Teepo attempt to rob Bunyan but he catches them and holds them prisoner. Bunyan agrees to let them all go if Rei heads to Mt. Glaus to defeat the Nue. He has Ryu and Teepo stay behind to work for him by chopping wood. After completing their task, Ryu and Teepo are released, and follow Rei to Mt. Glaus. After the party is defeated by Balio and Sunder, Bunyan finds Ryu in the woods and nurses him back to health. Afterwards, Bunyan becomes a Master.
Breath of Fire IV[]
- Main article: Bunyan (Breath of Fire IV)
Bunyan discovers Fou-Lu injured in the woods after his confrontation with Yohm. He cares for Fou-Lu until he regains his strength, mirroring his appearance in the previous game where he nurses Ryu back to health. Bunyan is once again available as a master in the game. You must have all of the other masters completed before he will become yours.
Etymology[]
Bunyan seems to be named after the legendary Paul Bunyan.
