Strategy[]

As stated before, group-targeting attacks work extremely well, especially with the Bat's low Defense and Intelligence.

Learning Gloom[]

Bats allow the player to learn the Gloom ability, which turns a target undead, very early in the game. However, since Bats will only use this ability if they are weakened, this can present difficulties if the party is sufficiently strong that they defeat the enemy in a single hit. One way to earn the ability early on in the game is by having a Level 1 Ryu equipped with a Bent Sword perform a normal attack against a Bat. This will usually leave the enemy with at least 1 HP (it's also possible to do this with Rei by using Pilfer instead of a normal attack). If the player doesn't mind not learning the skill until later in the game, then an easy way to do so is to backtrack to the area after they have the Backhand, which can be learned after they visit Wyndia for the first time. Have a character use Backhand while the rest of the party destroy the other bats and then have the entire party use Examine on the weakened Bat until it uses Gloom.
