Main article: Balio

Balio is a boss in Breath of Fire III. He is fought twice during the course of the game, both times in conjunction with Sunder. He is technically fought a third time in the form of Stallion. The first battle results in a mandatory defeat, and as such, must be lost in order to progress in the game.

Cedar Woods[]

This battle cannot be won, but you can still steal the available items, so using Pilfer with Rei until defeat is recommended.

Castle Wyndia Dungeon[]

This battle can be won, however the game will still continue if Ryu were to be defeated.

  • Have Ryu equipped with a Silver Knife, Bandana, Bracers and Waistcloth; having an agility higher than 12, you can guarantee that your actions will happen before Sunder AND Balio.
  • Have some 10 vitamins on your inventory, and the skill Influence.

Cast Influence on Balio, this way, Sunder will attack Balio.

Now, you will only be hit by Balio attacks (Lightning - 40-45 damage - Attack - 25-40 damage). Dedicate all your turns on the healing, using Healing Herbs when his attacks are lower than 40, and Rejuvenates/Vitamins when his attacks deals 40 or more. Should you choose to enter Accession, you cannot use breath attacks so long as Nina is there. You can fix this by using a Healing Herb on her to get her to flee early so that she is safely out of the way.

After 10 turns, the princess will wake up, attacking one of the two bosses and escaping during the following turn. Two turns later, Balio will flee (so be sure to keep healing any damage!), and the following turn Sunder will follow Balio.

As a reward, you will win 110 Exp, and maybe an Asbestos Armor or a Broad Sword.
